Keywords:
Conjunction, Spoken Discourse, Arabic conversation in movieAbstract
In the spoken discourse of the 2021 movie Ar-Rihlah, some conversations were found to not use conjunctions, while others did use conjunctions. The purpose of this study is to explain the meaning and types of conjunctions in Arabic conversations in this movie. In this study, the author uses the theory of conjunctions based on SFL proposed by M.A.K. Halliday. Furthermore, this study uses three methods, namely (1) data collection using the techniques of searching, collection, checklists, and note-taking; (2) data analysis using Spradley's qualitative content analysis model modified by Santosa (2017); and (3) presentation of research data using formal and informal models. Based on the results and discussion, it can be concluded that the meaning of conjunctions in the film Ar-Rihlah is quite varied and indicates spoken discourse that pays attention to the use of conjunctions. Furthermore, explicit mentions in external conjunctions are more dominant than implicit mentions, indicating that external conjunctions in this movie are sufficiently cohesive. Meanwhile, explicit mentions of internal conjunctions are fewer than implicit mentions, indicating that internal conjunctions in the movie's dialogue are less cohesive.
