THE RESISTANCE OF PAKISTANI CHARACTERS TO THE ETHNOCENTRISM OF SAUDI ARABIAN SOCIETY IN THE FILM JĀYIBAH AL-ʿĪD

Abstract

This articel examines the film Jāyibah al-ʿĪd directed by Noūrā Aboūshoūsha, focusing on the cultural conflicts between Saudi Arabian and Pakistani characters. The study aims to identify ethnocentric attitudes shown by Razan's Saudi family toward Sameer's Pakistani family, as well as the forms of resistance carried out by Sameer's family. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research analyzes dialogues in the film. The findings reveal nine instances of ethnocentrism experienced by Sameer as part of a subordinate group, divided into four elements: in-group as the center (three data), a sense of superiority (one data), belittling the out-group (three data), and internal cohesion and loyalty (two data). Additionally, six forms of resistance were identified, consisting of five instances of public transcript (open opposition) and one instance of hidden transcript (behind-the-scenes frustration).
