Abstract

Early childhood cultural literacy needs to be developed through learning experiences that connect children with local cultural expressions through activities appropriate to their developmental stages. This community service program aimed to develop BrainDance based on Indonesian-Malaysian Malay dance movements as an alternative learning practice for promoting cultural literacy among early childhood education teachers. The community service program employed a participatory training approach consisting of coordination, identification of eight BrainDance movement patterns and their corresponding Malay dance movements, collaborative movement development, presentation, guided practice, and reflection. The program involved early childhood education teachers from Bukittinggi, Indonesia, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, with the Malaysian component conducted at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Education, Universiti Malaya, from 18-22 May 2026. The results showed the development of a mapping of eight BrainDance patterns with Malay dance movements, namely Takzim, Siku Keluang Samping, Bentang Alam, Lenggang, Buka Bunga, Meniti Batang, and Putar Alam, along with their cultural meanings incorporated into the training materials. The teachers gained practical experience and skills in performing and developing BrainDance movements contextualized within Malay culture. The activity demonstrates that BrainDance can be used as a systematic movement framework to support the integration of cultural experiences into early childhood learning, although its direct impact on children's cultural literacy was not measured.
