About the Journal
About the Journal
Albuchuts: Journal of Arabic Literary Studies is a peer-reviewed scholarly journal published by the Arabic Literature Department, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Surakarta, Indonesia. The journal was first published in June 2026 and is issued twice a year, in June and December.
Albuchuts provides an academic forum for research and scholarly discussion on Arabic literature across historical periods, genres, and critical traditions. The journal publishes original research articles and scholarly reviews that contribute to the development of Arabic literary studies through theoretical, historical, comparative, textual, and interdisciplinary perspectives.
The journal accepts manuscripts in English, Arabic, and Indonesian.
Focus and Scope
Albuchuts is devoted to the study of Arabic literature and related literary phenomena across historical periods, genres, media, textual traditions, and critical perspectives.
The journal welcomes research on classical, modern, and contemporary Arabic literature, including poetry, prose, drama, children's literature, young adult literature, digital literature, and other forms of literary expression. Areas of interest include literary theory and criticism, literary history, poetics, narratology, stylistics, reception studies, comparative literature, literary translation, adaptation, intertextuality, authorship, literary production and circulation, and other developments in Arabic literary studies.
The journal also welcomes research in Arabic philology and literary manuscript studies, including textual criticism, manuscript transmission, critical editions, textual variants, codicology, paleography, manuscript circulation, and other manuscript-based approaches that contribute to the understanding of Arabic literature and literary traditions.
Studies of film adaptation, screen adaptation, and intermedial relations between literature, film, theatre, digital media, and other forms of cultural expression are also welcome, provided that the research maintains a clear literary focus and contributes substantively to Arabic literary studies.
Comparative and transnational studies are welcome when Arabic literature constitutes a substantial part of the research object and scholarly contribution.
Albuchuts also welcomes interdisciplinary approaches from linguistics, cultural studies, gender studies, postcolonial studies, sociology, anthropology, history, philosophy, religious studies, media studies, translation studies, digital humanities, ecocriticism, and related fields, provided that these approaches are used to investigate literary texts, literary practices, or literary phenomena and that the study makes a substantive contribution to Arabic literary studies.
The use of literary works merely as sources of linguistic, cultural, historical, religious, or social data does not by itself place a manuscript within the journal's scope. Likewise, the use of Arabic manuscripts as research objects does not automatically place a study within the journal's scope when its primary contribution is unrelated to literature or literary traditions.
Manuscripts should demonstrate a clear contribution to the understanding of literary form, meaning, aesthetics, narrative, style, genre, representation, reception, textual transmission, adaptation, literary history, or other dimensions of literary study.
The journal does not normally consider manuscripts devoted exclusively to general linguistics, Arabic language teaching, language acquisition, non-literary translation, general cultural studies, film studies without a substantive connection to literature, politics, international relations, religious studies, social sciences, or manuscript studies unrelated to Arabic literary traditions, unless they substantially engage with literary texts or literary phenomena and contribute directly to Arabic literary studies.

Peer Review Process
All manuscripts submitted to Albuchuts undergo an initial editorial screening to assess their relevance to the journal's scope, scholarly quality, originality, and compliance with submission requirements.
Manuscripts that pass the initial screening are evaluated through a double-blind peer-review process, in which the identities of authors and reviewers are concealed from each other.
Each manuscript is reviewed by at least two independent reviewers with expertise relevant to the subject of the submission. Reviewers assess the manuscript's originality, scholarly contribution, theoretical and methodological soundness, clarity of argument, use of relevant sources, and overall quality.
Editorial decisions are made by the editors after careful consideration of the reviewers' comments and recommendations. A manuscript may be accepted, returned for revision, or rejected.

Originality and Similarity Screening
Authors are required to submit original manuscripts that have not been published elsewhere and are not simultaneously under consideration by another journal.
Submitted manuscripts are screened using similarity-detection software. The journal applies the following thresholds:
- overall similarity must not exceed 20%;
- similarity from any single source must not exceed 2%.
Similarity percentages are not used as the sole basis for editorial decisions. Editors may also consider the type, location, and context of the detected similarities.
