DEVELOPMENT OF MEESTER CORNELIS MUNICIPALITY (JATINEGARA) YEARS 1905-1935

Abstract

This research aim is to describe about development of The Municipality Meester Cornelis (Jatinegara) in
decentralization period between 1905-1935. Decentralization in Dutch East Indies began in 1903 with the
issuance of decentralisatie wet 1903. The formation of Meester Cornelis to become one of the gemeente areas
is related to the presence of Dutch people living there and demanding self-government managed by the Dutch.
In addition, Meester Cornelis qualifies to become an autonomous region thanks to the finance it gets from
trade. In the period 1905–1925, Gemeente Meester Cornelis experienced ups and downs in the regional
financial aspect until a crisis occurred due to an error in land acquisition at the land company (Grondbedrijf).
Development is aimed at supporting facilities for the community in socio-economic aspects and public
transportation. Meester Cornelis turned into a stadsgemeente because of the 1922 decentralization law. The
development of Meester Cornelis in the 1926–1935 period continued for financial affairs and urban
development through the role of municipal companies. Territorial unification with Stadsgemeente Batavia
ended the journey of independent government for Stadsgemeente Meester Cornelis.
