Carbon trading is considered as a method for creating ecological stability and providing economic incentives for those involved. This research aims to provide an analysis regarding the success of PT Rimba Makmur Utama through the Katingan Mentaya Project in the practice of carbon trading through land conservation and restoration methods even though when they started this business in Indonesia, the local government had not yet regulated the instruments needed to support this business. This research uses qualitative research methods with grounded studies and uses Ecological Modernization and Green Economy approaches as a tool to analysis. This research is deemed necessary because carbon trading is a concrete step that can be taken to reduce the issue of global warming which increases every year considering that this practice has also been regulated by the Indonesian government through Peraturan Presiden Nomor 98 Tahun 2021. This research found that PT RMU adopted a voluntary carbon market system and sold carbon credits under VCS certification standards in conducting carbon trading since it first started selling in 2017. However, in 2021, when the Indonesian government issued regulations regarding this business, The existing carbon trading practice must stop because PT RMU has not received permission to sell carbon even though permits for this practice have been sought since 2021. In the end, the carbon trading practice is an effective method of retarding global warming if supported by clear regulations; effective and transparent bureaucracy; and a massive sense of responsibility from the government, private sectors, and society.
