This inaugural issue of Plantae Protecta presents five research articles on ecologically based plant protection. Studies from Indonesia evaluate barn owl nest boxes (Rubuha) for suppressing rice field rat infestation, and show how flowering plants and refugia on rice field bunds support egg parasitoids of the yellow rice stem borer and reshape arthropod functional guilds in lowland rice. The issue also reports on black tea extract as an ultraviolet protectant for Spodoptera litura nucleopolyhedrovirus, and on the environmental and cultivation factors driving the dieback epidemic of nutmeg in smallholder plantations of south-western Ethiopia.
